Provost and Executive Vice President
Washington State University
The Provost and Executive Vice President at Washington State University serves as the University’s chief academic officer and works closely with the President in providing overall direction and leadership for the institution. The Provost is responsible for all aspects of the university’s academic mission and leads its efforts in the pursuit of academic excellence. Reporting to the President, the Provost and Executive Vice President is responsible for the formulation and implementation of institutional policies and operations, consulting with vice presidents, chancellors, vice provosts, deans, and university governance.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Provost and Executive Vice President provides strong leadership in planning, development, and implementation of all academic programs and policies. Specific responsibilities involve academic affairs at all campuses including approval of hiring, tenure, and promotion decisions; effective management of resources and academic colleges; centrally managed organizations including but not limited to, undergraduate education, the university libraries, the Graduate School, distance and professional education; liaison with internal and external organizations including the Faculty Senate, the WSU Foundation; and a strong commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students. The following administrators report to the Provost: Associate Executive Vice President, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Vice Provost for International Programs, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Vice Provost for Academic Policy & Evaluation, deans of the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering & Architecture, Honors College, College of Liberal Arts, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Sciences, and College of Veterinary Medicine.
Qualifications
Candidates must have demonstrated significant achievement in leadership, scholarly activities, and administration to serve effectively as the chief academic officer of a major public university. Specifically, the candidates must have the following qualifications:
- An earned doctorate or terminal degree and a strong record of teaching, research, and creative activities to be appointed as a tenured professor in one of the academic departments at Washington State University.
- Demonstrated record of innovative leadership including strategic planning, commitment to academic excellence, effective management of resources, and administrative achievements.
- Demonstrated understanding of the University’s tripartite mission of excellence in teaching/learning, research and creative activities, and outreach and service.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with both internal and external constituencies to ensure continued vitality and enhancement of academic programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity among students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, high levels of creativity and energy, and ability to inspire others.
